Tree Conservation Tips
How to plant a tree:
Bare-root Seedlings Insert shovel blade straight down into the ground and move it back and forth to make a V-shaped opening. Push roots into slot, pointing down, leaving tree stem at its original depth in the soil. Step on soil alongside slot to close the opening. Water well.
Larger Saplings; Bare-root, Potted, or Ball and Burlap Dig a hole twoce as big as the root ball. Remove burlap and insert tree to original depth. Carefully replace soil around roots, packing with hands to leave no voids. Gently step on loose soil to compress it without breaking roots, dishing up the edges of the hole to hold water. Water well.
Water new trees with an average of five gallons per week for the first summer.
